First Official Still From 'The Rover'

ETA: Added bigger The Rover still - digital scan at the bottom of the post

Australia was founded as a repository for crooks and criminals — a wretched hive of scum and villainy, like the British Empire’s own Mos Eisley. Of course, that was a long time ago and the Australian national demeanor has since shifted from “kill or be killed” to “live and let live,” but David Michôd’s gritty 2010 drama Animal Kingdom chronicled some of the country’s more modern criminal descendents. In his upcoming sophomore effort, The Rover, the director takes things even further.

Robert Pattinson plays a denizen of the Outback in the near future, after a worldwide financial collapse has sent many like him running to the still viable mines of the Australian desert. “It’s like a new gold rush,” says Michôd. “Where people from all corners of the world have come out to the desert to scrape out an existence. Petty criminals and miscreants and hustlers.” Guy Pearce, who had an uncharacteristically reserved role in Animal Kingdom, gets to sink his teeth into a nicely nasty part opposite Pattinson. “The basic story is really quite elemental,” says Michôd. “You’ve got a really dark, dangerous, murderous person in Guy’s character, and in Rob’s character you have a quite troubled and damaged, but beautiful and naïve, soul.”

Of course, just by its setting and basic plot, The Rover is poised to draw comparisons to one of the antipodean country’s most memorable cinematic contributions. “You put cars in the desert in Australia and people are going to think of Mad Max,” says Michôd. “And with all due respect to that film — and I stress that — I think The Rover is going to be way more chillingly authentic and menacing.”

  5. ahhhhh, all these pix are here just to tease us..lol i find it funny that no matter what the ugly changes he does to himself for all these movies, he still looks handsome. can't wait for The Rover with "dangerous, dark" Guy and "naive soul" Robert.

  6. I think he looks awful, but I love it. He will be able to not only portray good looking individuals but those that are not attractive at all and he will be able to play so many diverse roles. Looking forward to view this movie when it is released. He is going to kill it.

  7. W. O. W.
    Me. Wants. Now. !!!!!

Robert looks so rough, "life-beaten", troubled, and vulnerable but at the same time tough!
And Guy is just Guy, period! He could lend his skin to anything, and it would be definitely believable

  9. What I find amazing is the acceptance of Rob in this role. I have read on other entertainment sites the excitement of Rob in this movie. He is making his move to wider acceptance of the recent roles he has chosen and shedding so much of the negative comments from his Twilight role. I am absolutely thrilled for him.

  10. And I really don't understand the negativity for twilight. He made an amasing Edward - it's clear from the welcome from the male population... But I'm looking forward his new roles after Georges and Eric Packer.

  11. And I think whoever portrayed Edward, would have the burst Rob did...
My granny used to say: grows like a palm, and drops like a cocoanut...
Drawing attention is relatively "easy", but keeping yourself there, and fulfilling people's expectations, that's the hard part... And I think that's why Rob chose this... To show the world that he's an actor capable of portraying anything... Not just good looking, mysterious guys...
Pattinson, you've got my respect... :)
