New Rob Interview With Salon
He’s been trying to shed Edward Cullen for years — and now he may finally have done it.
Robert Pattinson rose to megafame playing Cullen, a lovelorn vampire, in the “Twilight” series, but has in his off-dury hours been trying to become something more interesting than a leading man. After the period piece “Bel Ami” and the romantic dramas “Remember Me” and “Water for Elephants” didn’t connect, Pattinson has styled himself as a versatile supporting actor. In David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis,” Pattinson, perpetually picking up new visitors in his limousine, was nominally the lead but was willing to cede the role of most interesting person on-screen to just about anyone who crossed his path; in Cronenberg’s forthcoming “Maps to the Stars,” Pattinson plays the limo driver.
And in David Michôd’s new film “The Rover,” Pattinson makes his greatest departure yet, playing a mentally challenged vagrant who’s migrated to a post-apocalyptic Australia and finds himself on a quest to help Guy Pearce find his car. It’s the sort of role that at a different time of year, and in a tonier, more tasteful sort of film, ends up in Oscar conversations: Pattinson has mottled brown teeth and a thick Southern accent. If this sounds like a way for Pattinson to finally shed the constraints of his leading-man roles, it is — but it’s clear that Pattinson is having fun while doing it.
He seemed open and relaxed in his standard white T-shirt when we met at New York’s Bowery Hotel, where he chugged sparkling water between answers. He spoke freely about what’s next up — including James Gray’s “Lost City of Z” adaptation and “Life,” a James Dean biopic by Anton Corbijn. Spoiler alert: Pattinson is not playing Dean.
When you go for weeks at a time promoting something, are there questions you’re repeatedly asked that you’re tired of answering?
Well, I can never remember what I’m asked. But I kept getting asked about flies in the outback, because I’d mentioned one time in the very first interview I did, “Oh, there’s loads of flies there — it’s really crazy.” And when interviewers will ask you again, I’m like, “Surely, surely you’ve seen this. Yes, there are a lot of flies.” And they just keep asking. What do I say? “Oh, actually flies are amazing; it was the best part of all of it.”
I feel like there’s only so much you can say about flies.
Which is absolutely nothing.
So you started filming last year – take me through a little bit of your state of mind. You must have been feeling pretty free in some sense, now that the “Twilight” franchise is completely over.
I got the part about eight or nine months before we started shooting it. And then I was supposed to shoot another movie before I ended up doing it. And I did “Maps to the Stars” as well, just a little part. I was going to do another lead role and then it got pushed, so I’ve basically been thinking about this for so long that it kind of feels like I was almost working the whole time.
But yeah, I finished “Twilight” like, six or seven months before maybe. It’s strange, I mean, it’s kind of — it feels like it was such a long time ago because we finished shooting ages ago, like two or three years ago. But yeah, it is interesting – you’re kind of like, “Oh, this is actually what you’re branching out doing now, this is what your career is and it’s actually kind of looking like something.” Whereas when I did each of the movies in between the “Twilight” movies it kind of reset every time. Every “Twilight” was so huge that it just overshadowed everything.

Holliday Grainger Talks About Rob: "He’s Lovely"

Holliday also told us about her friend Robert Pattinson. The pair have worked together on a number of projects over the years including The Bad Mother’s Handbook in 2007 and Bel Ami in 2012 in which they played lovers. ‘He’s lovely,’ she says. ‘I’ve known him since his pre-Twilight days when he was a normal person and it was still like, “ooh you’re playing Cedric Diggory (in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire)”. He’s managed to keep very level headed and normal. I don’t understand how. I can’t fathom the idea of living a life like he lives. On the set of Bel Ami in Budapest there would be hundreds of screaming girls there at 5am and they would still be cordoned off when we finished. He had to move hotels because there were so many people outside his. One day he was signing autographs on the way home from work at 6am after a night shoot. Bless him, that’s an extra level of hard.’

Adorable New/Old Fan Pictures From the Bel Ami Set
More pictures under the fan report.

More Pictures

"So I forgot about these pictures. For a long time I wasn’t allowed to put them on the internet because Rob’s in costume. (...) Rob is the funniest, goofiest person I think I’ve ever met. I was on set of Bel Ami for a few days working with my dad and he uuuugh, i just can’t put it into words. He was so lovely to everyone, I can’t stand people hating on him because he was like a puppy. When I got the chance to talk to him I never felt like he was just being nice to a fan. This captures the moment we were talking about how he felt like a cowboy in his costume."

Robert Pattinson (Twilight franchise, Water For Elephants) joins Academy Award® nominees Uma Thurman (Best Actress, Pulp Fiction, 1994) and Kristin Scott Thomas (Best Actress, The English Patient, 1996) and Golden Globe® nominee Christina Ricci (TV’s “Pan Am,” Monster) in Bel Ami, coming to DVD August 7th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film follows penniless soldier Georges Duroy (Pattinson), who has returned to Paris from the war around the turn of the century. Duroy quickly learns that by using his wit and powers of seduction, he can improve his financial and social status. The DVD includes the featurette, “Bel Ami: Behind the Scenes.”
Synopsis: Based on Guy de Maupassant’s classic novel, this tale of temptation and obsession chronicles Georges Duroy’s (Robert Pattinson) rise to power from his meager beginnings as a penniless ex-soldier by using the city’s most influential and wealthy women. Set in turn of the century Paris, Duroy seduces Madame de Marelle (Christina Ricci) then marries Madeleine Forestier (Uma Thurman), a former comrade’s wife. Fueled by his insatiable quest and lustful greed, Duroy conquers Madame Walter (Kristin Scott Thomas), only to learn that every conquest is marred by betrayal and that true love eludes him.
Included Bonus Feature: “Bel Ami: Behind the Scenes” featurette
BEL AMI was directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod from a screenplay by Rachel Bennette, based upon the novel by Guy de Maupassant. Uberto Pasolini produced with Simon Fuller serving as executive producer.
The film has a run time of 102 minutes, and it is rated R for some strong sexuality, nudity and brief language.

To celebrate the release of the DVD we decided to do something different. Today, July 26th, at 7PM BST/2PM ET we had watch-a-long of Bel Ami on twitter (if you're not following us yet, do it now --> @RPLife) with exclusive comments from the directors (Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod) about the film, Rob, and a lot more.
But if you missed it, here's what the directors had to say about Rob and the movie. The answers of Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod from the watch-a- long.

But if you missed it, here's what the directors had to say about Rob and the movie. The answers of Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod from the watch-a- long.
In the scene where Georges attacks Virginie Rousset - how did Robert Pattinson and Kristin Scott Thomas prepare for this?
Kristin, Declan, Rob and Nick discussed quite extensively, Nick chose the positions for the kick etc but then it was improvised in the moment.
What was the most difficult scene to adapt from the book to the film?
This wasn’t our job you would need to ask the writer, Rachel!
What was the most challenging thing about shooting in Budapest?
We had to close down the main boulevard, but the weather was perfect
How did Rob and the cast deal with the nudity? Did they have any issues with it?
Nobody had any issue with it they were all very professional when it came to these scenes!
How would you describe each member of your cast in one word?
This question is far too difficult! They are each wonderful in their very different ways.
What scene took the longest to shoot and how long did it take?
The dinner scene took two days as this was a crucial scene and we wanted to get it right
What scenes from the book did you choose not to film and why?
There were many scenes as we wanted to focus on his relationship with the women.
Are there any scenes that you filmed but decided to cut?
No we stuck pretty close to the script as we were really happy with the end result
What was your favourite scene to film? Why did you enjoy shooting this scene more than any other?
The Moulin Rouge was great fun - we loved the dancing and it was a really great location
How was Robert on set with the actress who played Clotilde's daughter?
Robert was great and very relaxed in the scenes shot between the two characters
What did you find most appealing, personally, about that period in Paris? Did you do a lot of research to get the right tone?
It’s very rich and exciting time in Parisian history. We did as much research as we could to get the scenes as accurate to the history as possible
It seems like Georges is similar to modern day ‘celebrities’ who become famous despite having no particular talent –
Yes – Nick, I and Rob were all attracted to this character of the empty man, on to whom others can pin their fantasies. A man who feels he deserves everything, who is rotted by the modern cancer of entitlement.
The women seem to pull the shots at the beginning of the movie but end up betrayed by Georges – why is this?
He uses them to get on, but don’t forget that they use him too.
Jealousy seems to be a main theme between Georges and Madeleine - was this an emotion that Robert and Uma could easily relate to?
I think we all can, don’t you???? Show me someone that never gets jealous and I’ll show you a liar!!!
The newspaper industry in Paris seemed quite corrupt – do you think this draws comparisons to the newspaper industry at the moment?
Yes! It is about the newspapers in close and secret collaboration with the government. They had no mobile phones to tap in those days.
Do you think Georges genuinely loved any of the ladies in the film? Madame Morelle seemed to get very hurt by him...
If Georges wasn’t so in love with himself he would probably be in love with Clothilde.
Of all the pairings in the movie, what’s your favourite relationship in the film?
Georges has probably met his match in Suzanne. I don’t think she’ll give him an easy life!
How long did the movie take to film?
Just the shooting was two months but it was many months in preparation.
You’re respected theatre directors, was it hard making the transition from directing plays to a movie?
We were daunted but once we got going we loved it. By the end of the first afternoon we were addicted and now can’t wait to make another movie!!
Did you have any preconceptions before working with Robert based on the films he had been involved with before Bel Ami?
Only that he was a very good actor, we had no idea how much fun he was. He is great to be with.
What was Robert Pattinson like on set?
A delight and very hard working
Had you watched the Twilight films before working with Robert?
The first one and we absolutely loved it!
Did any of the female cast develop a crush on Robert during filming?
You better ask them!
Is there any interesting stories involving him and fans during the filming of Bel Ami?
We hardly saw any fans. Seriously!! Until the red carpet at Berlin!!
Would you work with Robert Pattinson again?
Absolutely, he was a true professional and a real gentleman
How did you deal with the paparazzi?
We didn’t see them all that much close to the set - they have very long lenses!
Do you have any fond memories from working with Robert?
Every day was a pleasure and we still keep in touch. I hope we will work together soon again.
Can you tell us something about Robert that we might not know?
He is very serious about his work and loves watching movies (other peoples!!) He is deeply articulate…

New Rob Interview With Télé Câble SAT Magazine (France)
Thanks to rpattzrobertpattinson for the scans

Bel Ami is different from the Twilight movies that made you an international star. Why this movie?
Rob: I forced myself from the beginning to do different movies between each Twilight films because it made me feel better to become a normal guy again with no excessive makeup or contact lenses. That's why I wanted to do Bel Ami. I knew of Maupassant's novel because I love French litterature. The only regret I have is that we filmed in Hungary instead of Paris.
Why didn't you film in France?
Rob: It's very difficult to find the Paris from Guy de Maupassant in the French capital today. Whereas there's hundreds of streets in Budapest that look like Paris from the 19th century. But I hope to film in France soon.

New Rob Interview with M Magazine (Austria)
Thanks to @RKbubbles for the scans and translation
>

M: Robert, with Bel Ami you have already tried to emancipate yourself from Twilight. Now you have Cosmopolis. Aren't you scared you're gonna lose a lot of fans?
Rob: No because I always try to take really interesting parts that my fans could like as well. For me, doing small, interesting movies is a really great option to have a career after Twilight.
M: And what remains from Twilight?
Rob: What remains is the reassurance that we created a rememberable movie series. I don't really understand how the character Edward got so popular. The majority says, "He's just so sexy!". Others say, "It's the way he loves Bella. That one I can understand more. With time the movies got more and more romantic as well because there were so many conflicts in the story and because Bella and Edward had to fight for their love.
M: Do you feel a lot of pressure to be successful whenever you take on a new part?
Rob: While shooting I don't feel any kind of pressure really but it's really strange that everyone knows what you do and say. You really have to be careful not to hurt anyone and not to say anything wrong.
M: You and Kristen Stewart can never really escape the media... Everyone's always takling about your "relationship"...
Rob: Like I said, it's just important to pay attention to what you do and say when you're in the public eye. Now if I show up with a girl somewhere it's immediatly suggested we're dating. Even when I show up with a guy somewhere.
M: Will you be working together in the future?
Rob: Kristen and I are trying to write a script right now because she has an instinct for good stories. Also I've been throwing around ideas for some short movies that I wanna do as a director sometime. It's gonna be a while tho till I'm there because first I have to learn from all the amazing directors I get to work with. That interests me a lot.
M: What made you want to play in "Cosmopolis"?
Rob: I thought the topic was really interesting. I locked myself up in my hotel room for two weeks and learned the text. It shouldn't be changed because it was based on a novel by Don DeLillo. I thought that was really nice because for me it felt like I was singing a song in front of the camera. At the same time, sometimes it felt like we were shooting a documentary because as we were shooting the scene with the protests, the evening news reported about the actual protests of the Occupy-Wall-Street-Movement.

Robert Pattinson takes a break from his "Twilight" duties to woo a slew of women in "Bel Ami," which had its world premiere at this year's Berlin International Film Festival. The film retells Guy de Maupassant's tale of social climbing in 19th century Paris, with Pattinson starring as a young seducer who takes advantage of some influential Parisian ladies (Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas abd Christina Ricci). The film arrives on VOD via Magnolia Pictures before opening in select theaters.
